With a growing population of pods, you will see a heavy reduction in dinoflagellates over time. Dinoflagellates are a problem to have in your aquarium for two main reasons: A) The vast majority of commonly found Dinoflagellates in marine aquariums are toxic to most forums organisms that you will keep in a marine aquarium B) The can cover/coat corals to the point of stress them and even killing them Treatment: Elevate the pH levels in the tank, reduce the nutrients available in the water, reduce the number of hours you have your tank light on each day, use extra activated carbon, and remove dinoflagellates daily through siphoning. It is worth noting that not all of its members are harmful in the aquarium; indeed, dinoflagellates of the genus Symbiodinium (referred to as the zooxanthellae) are well-known for their important mutualistic association with reef-building corals. Dinoflagellates are organisms present in any aquarium, in fact they are necessary for smooth operation. They constitute an important part of the first step of the food chain so if we use a microscope we will find them in a greater or lesser extent. We even have famous dinoflagellates such as zooxanthella, symbiotically present in most corals.
I was told the dinoflagellates were consuming every nutrient before it could be read, and so that´s why I kept with the water changes, etc.
