P. aeruginosa is the type species of the genus Pseudomonas. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative rod (0.5–0.8 × 1.5–8 μm), which is mobile by polar flagella, and occurs singly, in pairs, or in short chains. This organism has a strictly respiratory type of metabolism with oxygen as the terminal electron acceptor, although nitrate can be used as an alternate electron acceptor. P. aeruginosa is a ubiquitous gram-negative aerobe belonging to the family Pseudomonadaceae. P. aeruginosa is rod shaped and occurs singly, in pairs, or in short chains. The term aeruginosa stems from the green-blue hue within colonies of many clinical isolates.
